MyKnee Patient Matched Cutting Blocks: there is a whole world beyond it

MyKnee® means investing in innovation to achieve success. Medacta® is proud to continue its innovation in orthopedics with the MyKnee® technology. MyKnee® is a set of patient matched cutting blocks for Total Knee Replacement which allows the surgeon to accurately match his surgical planning, based on individual patient’s anatomy and mechanical axis.

The entire process is kept in-house at Medacta’s headquarter. Starting from reviewing uploaded CT/MRI images of the affect joint, to then being able to take in to account surgeon specific preferences and create a virtual positioning of the implants. Through the MyKnee® WebPortal the surgeon can validate the planning as it is or directly apply specific modifications. Once the planning is validated, the in-house production of the MyKnee® cutting blocks starts.

MyKnee® means making instruments from powder.

The MyKnee® cutting blocks and the 3D bone models are manufactured using a selective laser sintering (SLS) technique
performed by a plastic laser sintering system. The SLS technique is a manufacturing technique that uses a high power laser to fuse small particles of powder into a mass that has a desired shape.

Thelaser selectively fuses powdered material by scanning cross-sections generated from a 3-D digital description of the part
(obtained from a CAD file) on the surface of a powder bed. After each cross-section is scanned, the powder bed is lowered by one
layer thickness, a new layer of material is applied on top, and the process is repeated until the MyKnee® cutting block or the 3D bone model is completed.

MyKnee® means safety for the patient.

The material used to create the MyKnee® cutting blocks is a fine powder of PA2200,a material characterized by high cristallinity and high melting point. Both the powdered raw material and the MyKnee® cutting blocks have undergone strict and rigorous testing to ensure the biocompatibility and safety of the product.

The material withstands hight temperature load and is characterized by good mechanical properties and high
long-term constant behavior. Therefore, the MyKnee® cutting blocks do not undergo structural changes that can compromise the performance of the device itself when it is cleaned, decontaminated and sterilized according to the cycles and the instruction given.

MyKnee® means investing in new technology and infrastructure.

Medacta® is committed in investing in new innovations for total knee arthroplasty: about 7% of its investments are dedicated
to Research & Development projects and education. We strongly believe that patient-matched technology allows to move a step forward in Total Knee Arthroplasty.

Medacta® is investing a consistent amount of its profits in to the newest equipments, machinery and computer technology. For this reason we have more than doubled the area dedicated to the MyKnee® department (from 100 m2 to 270 m2). Moreover, a new plastic laser sintering machine has been added to obtain a total number of three machines working 24 hours a day, 6 days a week to guarantee a constant production.
MyKnee® means investing in people.
MyKnee® does not mean only equipment and machinery. In 2010 Medacta® has employed 8 new engineers working full-time on the MyKnee® design. MyKnee® requires a huge amount of work: a total number of 14 people are working full-time to make all this happen. We make sure that a surgeon can always have a unique reference engineer at Medacta headquarter in order to collaborate in the MyKnee® preoperative planning creation. Our mission is to provide an effective and efficient service to the surgeons ensuring constant support.

Once again Medacta® is proving that investing in research, development and new technologies is the key to achieve success. Today, MyKnee® is a successful technique actively used by more than 130 surgeons in US, Australia and many countries in Europe. We never stop moving: Medacta® is constantly focusing on innovation and new products of the highest quality, and MyKnee® still has many surprises in store for you.
