IL SOLE 24 ORE: The prosthetic surgery of arthrosis at the Istituto Rizzoli in Bologna - An Italian center of excellence recognized worldwide

Professor Cesare Faldini, from the University of Bologna, Istituto Ortpedico Rizzoli, the oldest orthopedic surgery center in Europe known for blending innovation and multidisciplinary research, successfully performed hundreds of total hip arthroplasties utilizing the AMIS (Anterior Minimally Invasive Surgery) approach.

With patient expectations increasing”, said Prof. Faldini, “innovative techniques allow most of my patients to recover very quickly, because - the hip engine -  represented by muscles, tendons, vessels and nerves, is preserved. The patient is then able to walk as soon as he awakens from anesthesia. After a few weeks of simple attention, you can return to a completely normal life. Sports such as, skiing, swimming, cycling, can also be resumed within 3-6 months”.

The AMIS technique, informed by decades of clinical experience, is now a succesfully muscle-sparing approach to total hip replacement, with more than 300,000 procedures perfomed, that is associated with potential positive patient outcomes like shorter hospitalization and rehabilitation time, as well as a faster return to daily activities.

Professor Faldini’s videos are included in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Update Program through their Multimedia Library.
