Pre-operative planning is performed in four steps in order to determine the cup and stem sizes. The surgical technique manual gives the full instructions:

1. Always make a frontal X-ray of the pelvis with at least 20 cm distal femur.
2. Determine the cup size.
3. Determine the stem size.
4. Choose the corresponding head offset.

A complete range of templates allows to determine head and stem sizes.
